The exhibition 'Modern Pietas' took place in FUGA, Budapest, 2025
The Unknown Artist explored themes of war through the language of Orthodox icon painting, experimenting with imagery, sound, and senses.
This space becomes a catacomb where the soul hides its grief for the victims, inviting visitors not to be uplifted by the gold of art but to plunge into the horror, uncertainty, and sorrow of two nations.
The Unknown Artist, a female artist in exile, works with Orthodox iconographic traditions, reshaping them into the language of contemporary protest and sacred art. Her works confront themes of war, mourning and resistance — icons for the present moment.
In the underground Black Hall of FUGA, Budapest, the exhibition Modern Pietas unfolds like a journey into catacombs. Brutalist walls bear textures resembling bullet marks, evoking both sacred silence and the echoes of violence.
